KINGSLEY PROJECT

Overhauling a commercial property into a contemporary private home in Ann Arbor was no small feat for our clients of over 35 years. Privacy and low-maintenance landscaping were important goals as they transitioned from 18 acres to Downtown Ann Arbor.

Adding to the complexity of the property is how it’s situated on the floodway for the Huron River, designating all hardscapes to be permeable and resilient.

The design conversation led to all-season flowering plantings, winter texture and irrigation for proper establishment. Mountain and panicle hydrangea mix with low, powerhouse Rozanne Geranium and Dragon’s Blood Sedum. Karl Foerster grasses create movement while Blue Point Juniper give evergreen privacy.

Fendt permeable pavers provided a seamless match to the adjacent pavers while sustainably mitigating rain water.

As the saying goes, “The first year, plants sleep, second year, they creep & third year, they leap!” These ‘Twist-n-Shout’ Endless Summer hydrangea are now in their first year of planting and are already show-stoppers. Continual blooms on the lacecap structure pack a summer color powerhouse, perfect for this modern/minimal landscape design palate.

Often, initial planting installations can feel lackluster while plants are small and just begin to establish. Our horticulture team, led by Dave Fitch, only source from the best growers & plant nurseries. He checks root structures, growth habit and sizes to ensure a spectacular installation.

A  private lower meditation garden gives this modern landscape a calming breath from the pace of living in an urban setting.
